"With Passion for Sheep"
(Translated by Martha Nilsson Edelheit)
WITH PASSION FOR SHEEP
Artist Martha Nilsson Edelheit has a passion for sheep and the least one can say is that another type of art experience awaits visitors to the Piteå Art Gallery. The exhibition, which had its vernissage last weekend goes on till the 9th of May. The attachment to Piteå happened because Martha Nilsson Edelheit, who was born in New York 15 years ago, settled in Ekerö outside Stockholm, together with her husband, former SVT director Sam Nilsson. He has worked as a consultant many times in his old home territory.
When it was his wife's turn to do something in Piteå she did it with great success in a big sheep exhibition (OK there are also a few cows).
Most of the paintings are an explosion of color made on papier-mâché attached to chicken-wire.
Martha Nilsson Edelheit is clearly fascinated by sheep and an explanation can be that she sees her neighbor's Gotland sheep every day through her studio windows.
It was different in the 1960s. Then she caught the public's attention in quite another way with erotic motifs of naked women and men.
